Diary of a Kitchen Remodel Update

It’s been a few weeks since I wrote about the kitchen remodel.  The contractor started on November 18, so we are half way through the 3rd week.  Of course with Thanksgiving last week we lost a couple of days.

I’m amazed how much has been done in 10 working days, most of those with only one person working. So far there have been very few glitches. Either I have a fantastic contractor or I’m incredibly lucky. I think it’s a little of both.

When I think about all the horror stories about kitchen remodels I keep my fingers crossed and hope each day ends on a positive note.

I haven’t been sleeping well. I think worrying about one of those horror stories happening to me is keeping up at night!

The temporary kitchen in the basement is working okay.  It does make me appreciate how lucky I’ve been to have had nice kitchens all these years. I also realize how organized I really was in the old kitchen. Half the time I’m fumbling around trying to find a utensil or racking my brain to remember which box I packed something I didn’t think I’d need but found I did.

I just keep telling myself that this is temporary!

Here is the old kitchen. It’s messier than usual because of packing.

Here are some pictures of the progress over 10 working days.

Day 4, 5, & 6 were mostly the electrical work. Then there wasn’t any work for a day until the county inspector came.

Day 7 & 8 were scraping off the popcorn ceiling (always hated that), drywall patching, and installing the durarock floor for the tile.

After day 9 I got to see the cabinets for the first time. Before I had only seen pictures and the small door sample the cabinet store had. The display for this brand was a different door and color.

So far all our planning, measuring, asking lots of questions, and shopping seems to be paying off. Now I get to sit back and watch it all come together.

To a lighter load along the way.
