Missing Tax Rebates, Refunds

Although tax season has come and gone this year it appears that there are thousands of people who never received their rebates or refunds. I was reading an article about it ( http://www.walletpop.com/article/_a/bbdp/millions-in-tax-refunds-rebates/239192?icid=200100397x1212814208x1200830663 ) today and thought I would pass the information on to my readers. If you didn’t get your money last spring then now is the time to find out why. You only have until November 28. Don’t let the government keep what is yours.

It seems like we are all watching our pennies now. With the upcoming holiday season this will be a real challenge. Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away. I know I will be watching the ads to catch as many ingredients on sale as I can. With my family we all bring something for the meal. It’s at my sister-in-law’s every year so I don’t have to mess with too much. My job is the pumpkin pie, another dessert, and the homemade rolls.

If you do it all each year you may want to consider having different family members or guests bring part of the meal. If there is a certain dish they are known for then let them bring it. That’s one less dish you have to make. I always make the traditional pumpkin pie. I try to make a different other dessert each year and I also change up what kind of rolls I make. That keeps it interesting and fun without veering too far from tradition.

If you want to share any ideas you have to make Thanksgiving easier, please post them in the comment section.

Halloween Decorating Time

Yesterday I noticed that many homes are showing signs that Halloween is not far off. Actually it is only 18 days away. It will be here before you know it.

Since my children are grown and out of the house I haven’t had anyone pressuring me about decorating. If you have younger children I’m sure you hear about it all the time. If you haven’t started yet, like me, then now is a good time to start. …

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

I have always been supportive of Breast Cancer Awareness Month since my mother was diagnosed almost 18 years ago. Even after several reoccurrences she is considered a long term survivor. Now that I have been diagnosed with breast cancer this coming month takes on an even greater significance.

I have been researching for information for my monthly newsletter and came across a great website for health resources at: http://www.healthfinder.gov/. To find out all the health related observances for October you can check out this site: http://www.healthfinder.gov/nho/nho.asp?year=2008#79.

I plan on sending out the newsletter with this information and lots more in the next day or two. If you are not signed up to receive this free newsletter and would like to, please sign up on the right sidebar.

If you are behind on your yearly mammogram or even your yearly check-up with your doctor this would be a good time to schedule it. By making your appointments in October or early November you will get them out of the way before the holiday rush takes up your time. Our health is so important and many times we take it for granted. Please don’t. As scary as it is if something serious is found at least when found early it can be treated. If something is found at a later date because you procrastinated then it may be too late for a second chance.

Remember, that unless you have a very strong family history of breast cancer the odds are still in your favor that you will not get it. Wouldn’t it be better going into the holidays with a clean bill of health instead of worrying about it if you put off getting your yearly check up?

Here are several sites to check out more information on breast cancer and screening (mammogram and self exams).

September Gardening

Although it is still early in September the weather is cloudy, cool, and damp like a fall day. It caught me off guard when I went outside to walk the dog. I had to come back in a grab a light weight jacket. I’m not ready for cold weather yet but today reminds me to start preparing for it.

I was looking at the weeds that have taken over the front yard this year. I need to spray them this weekend so I can plant grass seed in a couple of weeks. I know my yard will look bad for a few weeks but I neglected it this summer due to my illness and now I need to get back to taking care of it.

IMGP0319 I have also been thinking about where I will put all the large houseplants that have summered outdoors. The house looks so uncluttered during the summer but I don’t want to lose all the plants I have had for years. I can either live with a jungle look all winter or make some tough decisions as to which plants I don’t want to keep. Too many plants can become clutter and that is what is starting to happen with my plant collection.

How do you handle these fall gardening chores? Please share your ideas in the comment section.

The Transition from Summer to Fall

Each weekday my dog starts barking at the school kids running to the bus stop. Then I hear the beeping of the bus backing up at the corner to turn around for it’s journey out of the subdivision. School is back in session.

My youngest is away at college so the familiar rushing around to catch the bus doesn’t happen here anymore. But that doesn’t mean I have lost the old feelings that come with a new start. From the time we were little and got excited about a new school year to when our own children went through school is a good portion of our lives. We become conditioned to looking at this time of year as a fresh start.

Then again maybe it’s because the end of summer is here and now is the time to get back to taking our lives a little more serious. Or maybe it’s because we follow nature (at least in the northern hemisphere) with the impending fall and winter we need to prepare for it. Sort of like the squirrels gathering nuts for the winter.

Any or all of these reasons may make us feel like it is time to get back to the business of taking care of our homes. In Spring we spring clean to make our homes clean and bright for the summer. In Fall we prepare our children for the long school year ahead. We start putting our gardens to bed for winter. We put away the summer clothes and bring out the fall clothes. We even start thinking about the holidays and what our plans will be.

September seems to be that transition month where in the beginning it’s hard to let go of summer but by the end we are ready to move forward to the fall and winter months.

How do you transition from summer to fall during this month?
