I am a visual person. When I don’t want to forget about doing something I put a reminder in a prominent place. This might be a note above my stove or an item out on the counter so I don’t forget to take it with me.
Many times clutter gets started because we let too many things stay out on the counter, dresser, by the front door, etc. because we are afraid of forgetting. The other side of the coin is when we put things away in a panic before guests arrive at our home. Later, we forget where we put those things. This may include bills we shove in a drawer or the dirty and damp bath towels stashed in a cabinet or linen closet floor. Hopefully we find those towels before the mold starts to grow on them.
Of course, there are times we wish something would stay out of our minds when we put it out of sight. My problem has been the Halloween candy. It is out of sight in the buffet in my dining room. I already have gone through one small bag of Mini Snickers but there is another bag hiding in there. An extra large bag of mixed candy is also there. That’s not the one my mind keeps thinking about. I keep telling myself that if the bag of Snickers is not open then I’m okay. So far, so good. But can I hold out for another whole week?
So much for out of sight and out of mind. It’s definitely a selective mind set.
